Women's SBU Fall Classic a Success

We opened the fall season hosting our SBU Fall Classic. With University of Texas El Paso and Siena here, we had a great weekend of tennis on our campus. Freshmen Fatya Amiri and Marissa Brossard, both from Florida, went 2-1 over the weekend in singles along with junior Kathryn Kvas. Marissa had a very impressive win over UTEP's No. 2, in three sets. She also lost a close one to UTEP's No. 1, 7-6,6-3. Fatya had one loss to UTEP's No. 1 but beat Siena's No. 1 and 2 convincingly the next two days. Kathryn lost her first match but bounced back to win the next two to go 2-1 for the weekend. Overall, everyone had a win in singles and doubles during the tournament. It was a great start for us but we look to get better and build on these matches throughout the fall. Next up is the Eastern Collegiates at Army, starting this Friday. We'll get a lot more match play and see what areas we need to work on and improve.

2011 Fall Season Begins for Men

The men's team began the 2011 fall season at the Navy Invite. After graduating 3 seniors, its a different looking team. We lost all the singles today vs. Navy but played pretty well overall. In doubles, Elliot Fanshell and Luis Guevara won at No. 1 but we lost the other two spots. Up tomorrow at 2pm is Temple.

Men and Women Both Go 1-2 over the weekend

Both our men's and women's teams went 1-2 last weekend. The men got a key win in the A-10 against Charlotte, 4-3. It was a crazy match with us winning the doubles point clinching it at No. 2 after being up a break, giving it back and down 2 match points, saving those and then winning it 9-7. In singles we took the first singles match off at No. 4, freshmen Elliot Fanshell, winning is straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. We then lost the next three singles matches at 1,2 and 6. Sophmore Oscar Yanez won in three sets setting up the final match at No. 3, senior Mikhail Sudakov. Mikhail came through winning 6-4 in the third to clinch it for us.
We then came out the next day and lost both matches to a tough James Madison team, 6-1 and No. 29 ranked Virginia Tech, 7-0. We learned a lot from this weekend and plan on using it to prepare us for A-10 Championships.
The women also won their first match of the weekend against Indiana University of Pennslyvania. We lost the doubles point but came back strong in singles winning 5of 6 matches. The next day we lost 6-1 to Youngstown St. and then 7-0 to Pitt. Both of these teams are good but once again we learned from this and look forward to the rest of the season.
Both teams are home March 4th weekend with matches against IUPFW and Bucknell. Please come out to see us.

Women Lose 2 Over Weekend

We played Cornell and Cleveland St. and lost both this past weekend. Against Cornell, we played better doubles but in singles they were too much for us. We had the same results the next day against Cleveland St. Our biggest thing right now is competing. We have to get better at it. It's not all about hitting forehands and backhands as it is about us competing on every point. It's something we need to correct in the next few matches and weeks. Men Open 2011 Spring With 2 Losses

Our men opened the spring season with two losses. First up was Penn State, a nationally ranked team, who has always given us problem. We played pretty good doubles and had some chances to win at No. 2, with Chris Post and Elliot Fanshel, but came up empty. In singles Chris pushed PSU's No. 1 to 3 sets but lost the third. Our lone win came at No. 6, Oscar Yanez, who won in straight sets.

We then hosted Duquesne and lost 6-1. We were really disappointed with this result but we did have 4 three set matches and only won one. We were serving for the match at No. 2 doubles and lost in a tie-breaker. Overall we know we can do better and discussed some of the things we need to work on before we face Cleveland St. this Sunday.

Men Begin 2010 Campaign at Navy Invite

We began the fall 2010 season by competing this past weekend in the Navy Invite in Annapolis, MD. We played three matches against Temple, Navy and Niagara over the 3 days. Against Temple, seniors Enric Larregola, Mikhail Sudakov and freshman Elliot Fanshell all had wins, as did our No. 2 doubles team of senior Chris Post and Elliot.
Day 2 saw us battle Navy. We captured No. 1 and 2 doubles, Larregola/Sudakov and Post/Fanshell but lost all 7 single matches. There were some close ones, Chris lost 7-6,6-4 at No. 1 and Mikhail lost in a third set tiebreaker.
On Day 3 we saw local rivals, Niagara. We again took No. 1 and 2 doubles but this time we captured 6 of the 7 singles matches. Chris, Mikhail, Elliot and freshmen Billy Cove won in straight sets while Enric and sophomore Luis Guevara won third set tie breakers.

It was a good ending to a fun weekend. We were able to catch a Navy football game, including the impressive march on of all the midshipmen, the military fly-over and a few of our alumni made the match.(Thanks, Alex, Antonio and Nate)
Men now have a few weeks before we head to Army for a tournament on Oct. 8-10 weekend.

Men Continue Play at A-10 Championships

We just finished our second day at the A-10 Championships. On the first day we defeated St. Joes, 4-0 in the morning. In the afternoon we came back at took the doubles point from No. 2 seed, Xavier. In singles we got wins from Diegeo Valdenegro at 2 in three sets and Enric Larregola in straight sets at No. 3. We lost at 1, 5 and 6 which set up the deciding match for Mikhail Sudakov at No. 4. Unfortunately we couldn't finish it as Mikhail lost 6-2 in the third set.

I can't tell you how proud I was of the effort and fight we gave. We definitely represented SBU in a positive way and we have nothing to be ashamed about.

Today we played the No. 5 seed, Charlotte. We took the doubles point again(we've won all three doubles points this weekend). In singles we won at 1, 2, and 3 to win the match 4-3. Diego had the key win at No. 2 to clinch the match for us. Tomorrow, Sunday, we play St. Louis for 5/6 place. Seeing as we were seeded 7th, that's pretty good.

Women Struggle Over The Weekend

The women's team had a long weekend, going 0-3. On Friday we played Xavier and lost 7-0 but had some tough matches, with Maria and Amanda both losing in the third sets. On Saturday, against Dayton, Amanda won in straight sets but we lost the other matches and on Sunday we lost 7-0 to IUFW but won at #2 dougles. Women travel to Navy and George Washington this weekend.

Men Go 2-1 for the weekend

The men's team went 2-1 over the weekend with wins against conference opponent Dayton and IUFW. On Friday, we played defending champ Xavier, losing 5-2 in a hotly contested match. Enric and Mikhail both won their singles matches and Chris and Oscar lost in the third set each, only one break of serve.
Coming back on Saturday we beat Dayton 6-1, sweeping doubles and winning 5 out of 6 singles easily. Sunday we played IUFW and won 5-2. This was more of a mental match, as we were sore and tired from the last two days. It was good to finish off the weekend on a high note. Next up for us is Buffalo on March 28.

Men and Women Ready for First Conference Matches

Both men's and women's teams head to Ohio this weekend for their first conference matches against Xavier and Dayton. We are excited to see how we measure up this year against the league. With only a month to go before our championships it is an exciting time.
Manuela Marin had a good win last weekend against Stonybrook winning in three sets, 6-1,0-6,6-4.
On the men's side, we lost 5-2 to Cornell with wins from Louis Guevara at No. 6 and the doubles point.

Kvas Helps Women's Team To Victory

Freshmen Kathryn Kvas came up big for us today. After losing the first set, 6-4, Kathryn bounced back to win the second set 7-5 and then in the third and deciding set, she clinched the match for us, 6-2. With the win the women move to 3-3 on the year.
Youngstown State forfeited at six singles and third doubles. We won the doubles point in an exciting match, 9-8, in a tiebreaker at second doubles, with Kathryn Kvas and Manuela Marin.
In singles we lost at No.'s 1,2 and 5. With the default at 6 singles and a straight set win for Amanda Pallikunnel at No. 4, the score was tied at 3-3, setting up the exciting final match.
It was great to see two of our freshmen step up to win crucial matches when it counts. Now we hope to use the experience when we play Pitt tomorrow at 10am at home.

Both Teams Dominate, 7-0 against St. Francis

After Saturday's disappointing matches, both teams bounced back to blank St. Francis at home.
The women began first at 10am and right away took the doubles point winning at No. 1 and 2. Then in singles we continued to control the match winning the first 4 matches in straight sets and the last two in third set tiebreakers. It was a good day for all, especially freshmen Amanda Pallikunnel who won 6-0, 6-0 in singles.

The men, who started at 2pm., picked up all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. No. 1 doubles played tough to win in a tiebreaker, saving a match point on a great return by Chris Post.
In singles, we won all six matches in straight sets, with Enric Larregola(3), Oscar Yanez(5) and Luis Guevara(6) winning 6-0, 6-0.

Women return to the courts this Friday, Saturday and Sunday against, Youngstown St., Pittsburgh, and Binghamton while the men host Youngstown St. on Saturday afternoon.

Rough Day For Both Teams

Both teams had a tough day on the carpet at Colgate. The women played first and lost 6-1. The loan win came from Freshman Amanda Pallukine, 6-4, 6-3.

The men lost in a battle, 4-3. We picked up wins in doubles from Chris Post/Diego Valdenegro at No. 1 and Luis Guevara /Oscar Yanez at No. 3.
In singles we took No. 4 and No. 6 singles, Enric. Larregola and Oscar Yanez. Chris Post lost 7-6 in the third set and Diego also lost in the third set.
Both teams return home tomorrow to play St. Francis at 10am, women and men at 2pm.

Men Put Up Great Effort at Penn State

The men's team played really well at No.55 ranked Penn State Sunday but ended up losing 7-0. At No. 1 doubles, Chris Post and Diego Valdenegro lost a tiebreaker, 8-7(4) in a well played match. Second and third doubles both lost but managed to play pretty well.
In singles the only three setter was Oscar Yanez at No. 6 who lost in the third set tiebreaker 10-8. Oscar played really well in the second set and tiebreaker and if he continues that he will do well for us.
Even though we lost the match, we felt pleased with our level of play and look to work on some of the things we noticed in the match. Next up for us is Colgate, away, on Saturday.
We will then come back and play the make up match with St. Franics on Sunday.

Both Teams Fall To Cleveland State

The men's and women's teams were both defeated by Cleveland St. on Sunday by identical score of 6-1. The women played first and lost the doubles point but did pick up at win at No. 2, with Kalia Garcia-Rojas and Manuela Marin winning 8-7 in a tiebreaker. In singles the only winner was senior Eileen Horgan at No. 6.

In men's play, the No. 1 doubles team of Deigo Valdenegro and Chris Post won 9-8 in a tiebreaker but we couldn't pull out the other two matches. We were confident going into singles though but we ended up losing 4 three set matches, with one of them a tiebreaker in the third.

The women are off next weekend before taking on Colgate and the men travel to Penn State on Sunday.

Men's and Women's Matches Postponed Due to Weather

Women Fall to Albany 5-2

Last Saturday the women's team lost to Albany in a highly competitive match. We won the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-7 in a tiebreaker, with Maria Barousse and Amanda Pallikunnel picking up the win. In singles, two freshmen, Kathryn Kvas and Amanda Pallikunnel both won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-4, respectively. At No. 1 singles, Manuela Marin lost in a third set tiebreaker, 10-8.

Bonnies Women Open Spring against Albany

Tennis Team with players at a successful fundraiser for cystic fibrosis

The men's and women's tennis hosted a fundraiser this past weekend for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We had eight amateurs match up with our players to play a round robin type of event. We played for almost three hours with prizes based on their finish. It was a great event for our team as they got a chance to play in a relaxed atmosphere and make a bond with the local community. Hopefully we can do a similar event in the spring. Please check back to our blog in January.

The men's and women's tennis teams will host a doubles tournament this weekend with the proceeds going to Cystic Fibrosis. Each amateur will be paired with a current Bonnie player and compete for prizes. It's a fun event for my players and way to give back to the community and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at the same time. Larregola and Sudakov provide great run at ITA Regionals

Enric Larregola and Mikhail Sudakov continued their impressive doubles play by making the round of 16 at the ITA Regionals held at Dartmouth. Larregola/Sudakov played Marist in the first round and crushed them 8-0. In the next round they beat, easily again, a team from Princeton, 8-3. This set them up for a round of 16 matchup with Harvard. Larregola/Sudakov got off to a fast start, leading 3-1 and then 4-2 before Harvard tied them at 7-7. Harvard broke us to take the lead and serve for the match but Larregola/Sudakov weren't about to give up. They broke back to send the match to a tiebreaker. Once again Harvard took the lead and again we came back to tie it at 6 all in the breaker. After a long point, we made a unfortunate error and Harvard was able to serve it out. Harvard went on to win the doubles tournament and qualify for National Indoors. But I think it proves that we have a solid team and are capable of competing with the top schools.

Barousse represents women at ITA Regionals

Maria Barousse was the Bonnies lone singles representative at the ITA Regionals held at Yale, CT. Maria played Hofstra in the first round and had a difficult match. She was down 3-0 in the first set before mounting a comeback only to lose 6-4. In the second set, once again down, this time 5-3, Maria came back and won 4 straight games to claim the set. The first two sets took a total of 2 hours and it was exhausting. So exhausting that the player from Hofstra was unable to play the third set, so she defaulted to Maria. Maria was ready for the third, a testament to her conditioning. In the next round, she played the 7th seed from Buffalo and lost in straight sets.

In the qualifying tournament, Kathryn Kvas and Amanda Pallikunnel, both won their first rounds only to lose in the next round. It was good experience, for freshmen, to see what the level of competition was like. This should make them hungrier to do better in the spring and next year.

Pallikunnel only winner on Day 1 of Army Invite

Amanda Pallikunnel won her first round match in the consolation round of the Army Invite over a player from Army 8-2. Amanda won our only winner on Day 1. Maria Barousse and Kathryn Kvas recieved byes in the consolation round after both losing in first round of main draw. Kalia Garcia-Rojas had a tough loss in the consolation 8-6 to Niagara. Will update draws later.

So as we sit on the cold, concrete, dirty floor (but who’s complaining?) at Army we have decided to give the Bonnies tennis blog a fresh start. Here goes...

Basically, we probably created this tournament just so we could win it. This year makes it two in a row for the guys! Meanwhile, the girls were practicing...

• Cornell: Mixed results

Men: A success in that Juan finally got to play on indoor courts (like a professional). VAMOS!
- Chris beat Army, 8-0
- Diego and Oscar beat Cornell, 9-8 (5), Army, 8-6, and then lost in the final to Stonybrook, 6-8

Women: A very good learning experience. The freshmen were a bit nervous, but we still managed to pull out a few wins and a few hard fought matches:
- Manuela beat Colgate, 7-6, 5-7 (4), 10-4
- Kathryn beat Colgate, 9-8 (1)
- Amanda Lehigh, 8-3
- Kalia beat Lehigh, 8-2
- Kalia and Maria lost a close doubles match to Colgate, 9-7

• Women at Army thus far:

We’re debating whether the highlight of the day is Amanda’s 8-2 first round consolation win, Kathryn’s grueling 4-6, 3-6 first round main draw loss or Kalia’s punishing forehand.
On second thought, it might have been Kathryn and Maria’s first round consolation “byes”.

Women Begin Tourney at Army

The women's tennis team will begin play tomorrow, Friday, at the Eastern Collegiate Invite held at Army. This is a flighted tournament with the players either playing singles or doubles. After a rough weekend last week, we are looking for a marked improvement. We have worked hard on developing the points and knowing what we want to accomplish with each shot. Playing singles will be Maria Barousse, Kathryn Kvas, Amanda Pallikunnel and Kalia Garcia-Rojas, and in doubles will be Riley Archer paired with Eileen Horgan. We will try to update each day. Valdenegro and Yanez make doubles finals at Cornell Invite

Diego Valdenegro(Senior) and Oscar Yanez(Freshman) made it to the finals of the B flight in doubles at the Cornell Invite before losing to Stonybrook 8-6. Valdenegro/Yanez had a great run in the tournament and made even more impressive, since they had never played together until this year. The men are off until the tournament at Yale with Army and Cornell also.

Men's Team Has Incredible Run to Finals of A-10's

The men's tennis team had an incredible run to the finals of the A-10 championships highlighted by a 5 hour match vs. George Washington in the semi-finals.
We had a bye in the first round because we were seeded 4th. In the second round we faced a tough Charlotte team and came away with a 4-1 getting wins in doubles and Jon Luce at 2, Leo Mochizuki at 3 and Enric Larregola at 6 singles.
The semi-finals featured SBU against No. 1 seed George Washington. The match began with us winning the doubles point in thrilling fashion. It came down to No. 2 doubles and we won it in a tiebreaker, 7-4.
In singles we took the first two matches off the court, No. 4, Leo, won 6-4,6-2, and Mikhail Sudakov won at No. 5, 6-0,6-1. We felt in pretty good shape, up 3-0 with four matches left. Then it got interesting. We lost at No. 6, and No. 2 and 3 in three sets, making the score 3-3. It all came down to Chris Post, sophmore, at No. 1 singles.
Chris had won the first set against GW's player, Yan Levinsky, who was Rookie of the Year, in 2008. In the second set, Chris lost a close one, 6-4 setting up a third set for a place in the finals.
Chris started out the third set in trouble getting broken early and starting to cramp in his legs. Down 5-2 and love-40, three match points, Chris kept fighting. He saved all three points and three more match points, one with a backhand volley that just cleared the net by inches.(Thank goodness we've been working on his volley's all year) In the tiebreaker, with about 75-100 people watching Chris finished off the match with a unreturnable serve. The team went crazy and mobbed him.

After the match we had to take Chris to the hospital for 2 bags of IV by ambulance. He came back the next day to play in the finals.

In the finals unfortunately, we were a little mentally drained from the 5 hour match the day before. We lost the doubles point and three singles matches to Xavier, who had won it all last year. With four returning starters and a good incoming class, we are looking to compete again next year.

Freshman Manuela Marin was named to the A-10 All-Conference team last week in voting done by coaches. It is the first player from St. Bonaventure to be named to the team since Johanna Pesola in 2001. Manuela was winning both her singles matches at A-10's when the match was stopped. Now we look to add to this award next year and anticipate bigger and better results. Congratulations Manuela.

Women finish season at A-10 Championships

Our women's team has finished the season at the A-10 Championships. It was a difficult season but one were the women competed hard and never, ever gave up. In the A-10's, we played the 4th seed, Rhode Island, and were right in the match at doubles. In singles we were leading at 1 and 2 singles, freshmen, Manuela Marin, and sophomore, Maria Barousse, both were winning when the match was stopped.
In the backdraw, we played St. Joes who was seeded one spot better than us. We lost a close doubles point, and once again Manuela and Maria were winning, each serving for the match when it was stopped.
We look forward to next year as we return 4 starters and look to bring in 4 quality players.

JP Gingras Enters SBU Hall of Fame

Congratulations to JP Gingras as he has been recently inducted into the St. Bonaventure Hall of Fame. A true talent on and off the tennis court, Gingras defined the meaning of student-athlete during his time at St. Bonaventure. Gingras made his initial impact on the court, garnering Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors in 1994-95. Struck by injury mid-way through his sophomore campaign, Gingras' determination increased as his focus on education became as strong as his on-court success. He returned his junior season, compiling a 24-9 overall record, including an 18-4 mark at No. 1 singles, en route to a spot on the A-10 All-Conference team, while completing his bachelor's degree in accounting in just three years. Despite suffering another injury as a senior, his 12-7 record to that point and respect from his peers in the A-10 earned him his second straight All-Conference honor. Gingras was a three-time Scholar Athlete All-American and a three-time All-Conference choice. Well done JP.

Sudakov Garners A-10 Player of the Week Honors

Mikhail Sudakov was named the A-10 Player of the Week last weekend as he went undefeated in singles and doubles. Mikhail, now 14-6 on the year in singles, beat Xavier in straight sets and Bucknell in three. He and partner, Enric Larregola, won both doubles matches. Mikhail, a sophmore, has shown remarkable improvement from last year, which is evident in his record. We are proud of Mikhail and hope more SBU players show everyone how good they are.

Men Look for Strong Showing at Cornell

The St. Bonaventure Men's Tennis Team look for a great match at Cornell as they take on the the Big Red, Saturday at Cornell. Our doubles teams have played well the past few weeks as players get accustomed to each other. Mikhail Sudakov and Enric Larregola have been especially strong as they have won six matches in a row. Cornell has been tough for Bonaventure as we have lost the last 5 times we have played them. But we go into the match with a lot of confidence and can't wait to play another quality opponent.

Kathryn Kvas signs early with SBU Women's Team

We are excited to have Kathryn Kvas joining our women's team for the 2009-2010 year. Kathryn brings a lot of experience to the team and has high expectations, on the court and in the classroom. She was ranked No. 1 in the women's singles division and as high as No. 29 nationally. We look forward to having her contribute right away and continue to move the Bonnies women up in the regional rankings and the A-10's.

Manuela Marin(Weston, FL) and Maria Barousse(Mexico) had a good first round doubles match vs. Georgetown winning 8-5. They worked well together hitting some incredible volleys and returning especially well. In the round of 32 they faced Cornell. The two weren't as successful as the first round losing 8-2. The Cornell team volleyed a little better than we did and that was the main difference.

In singles, Manuela faced off against Stan(Buffalo). It was a long grueling match, with each set taking about an hour to play. Manuela unfortunately came up short, 7-5, 7-5. She fought hard, even when down 5-2 in the second, getting back to 5 all. If she could have gotten the match to a third set, she would have won because the Buffalo player was really tired.

Overall it was a good experience for the two and its made them comeback and work that much harder on their games. We are looking for them to take this knowledge and experience and use it to prepare themselves for the spring season.

Men Compete at ITA Regional hosted by Yale

The men's team sent 5 players to the ITA Regionals last weekend at Yale. The best players from the region compete in this tournament. In the qualifying draw all three SBU players were defeated, Chris Post and Jon Luce in straight sets and Diego Valdenegro in three tough sets. In the main draw Victor Lecina lost to a player from Yale.
Leo Mochizuki played David Tillum from Georgetown and won easily 6-4, 6-4. In the second round Leo had to face Chris Clayton(Harvard), the No. 1 seed and 69th ranked player in the country. Leo lossed 6-1, 6-1. Clayton went on to win the tournament.
In doubles, Leo and Chris won their first round 8-6 and faced 7th seeded Cornell. They lost 8-6 in a well played matched. We had a few opportunities to get back on serve but couldn't quite make it. It was some of the better doubles we played this year though.
Now we are off until January. We will still practice and condition up until Christmas break.

Sign yourself up for the newly created Campus Match Play One Day Showdown set for November 1st and 2nd at St. Bonaventure University.

This tournament is open to juniors, college players, professionals and adults and are unsanctioned and non-ranking. Campus Match Play One Day Showdowns are a joint USTA/ITA Program with the following format:

One-day, one-set tournaments open to juniors, college players, professionals and adults. Singles players play up to four sets of singles using a round-robin draw.
Rules: One new can of balls per set. Service lets are in play at D1 men’s schools.
No officials needed. Campus Match Play Code of Conduct is used: 1) If your opponent questions your call, you change your call and award your opponent the point. 2) You cannot question your opponent’s call unless you would bet your LIFE that your opponent made a mistake.
Entry Fees are kept low to provide access to full range of players. $10 for singles.
The tournaments are run on campus with the College Coach acting as Tournament Director.

Women Convincingly Beat Mercyhurst

The Women's Team pick up a solid win this past weekend in Erie, PA, defeating Mercyhurst 6-3. The No. 1 doubles team of Maria Barousse(Mexico) and Manuela Marin(Florida) played well and walked away with a 8-1 victory. After losing at No. 2 and 3 doubles it was left up to the singles to collect the victory.

We had straight set victories at 1(Manuela), 2(Maria), 3(Ana Delgado) and 4(Yolande Callaghan) and a 3 set win at 5(Vanessa Rumpel). The exciting thing for us was how we played. Each player had to change strategies and tactics throughout the match to pull out the wins.

We have two weeks off before we play another tournament at Niagara.

Sudakov Reaches Finals of Flight 7

Mikhail Sudakov reaches the finals of flight 7 at the USTA Billy Jean King Men's College Tennis Invitational. Mikhail lost a hard fought three-setter to Dartmouth's Chris Ho 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Mikhail came out 2-1 in singles and doubles for the weekend. It was a nice performance from the sophomore native of Supino, Russia.
